Us Underline Miami

What brought us here

We’re Shan and Josh. We created this site to document and share our adventures. Our backstories include a mix of solo pursuits, including ultrarunning, charity-driven treks, and endurance cycling. After we met, our desire to challenge ourselves evolved into shared goals, especially after Shan ran across America in 2020. That journey alone was enough to completely shift our thinking. We realized we didn’t have to wait for the right conditions, the right gear, or the right phase of life to start something big. We could just go - and we did. Since our first run/ride on the Erie Canal Trail in 2021, we’ve covered more than 6,000 miles together, traversing both US coasts and tackling a few multiday “fun runs” along the way. Most notable was the East Coast Greenway, where after 78 days and 2,960 miles of running, Shan dropped to one knee at the finish line and proposed. We tied the knot on October 1, 2022.

So, what's the next big thing?

Shan will run 1100 miles through all 169 towns in Connecticut to raise money for two nonprofits helping children facing serious illness: Medals4Mettle and CT Children’s Foundation.

A little more about us...

Shan Riggs

Shan is a 46-year-old ultramarathon runner and sponsorship marketing professional. He's completed more than 50 ultramarathon races - winning several - and has over 20 years of sponsorship consulting experience, working with major brands and a wide range of properties. In addition to running competitively, Shan has completed many multi-day running expeditions around the world to support charitable causes. His transcon, in 2020, was a 3,255-mile run from San Francisco to the Connecticut coast, raising $45,000 for Foodshare. Since then, he's run the Erie Canalway Trail, the East Coast Greenway, and the Pacific Coast Bicycle Route with bike support from his wife, Josh. His extraordinary journey on the East Coast brought significant media hype and awareness to the East Coast Greenway Alliance in 2022.

Joshuaine Grant

Josh is a mom, an endurance athlete, and a scientist with a background in biophysics, biochemistry, and mathematical modeling. She brings 25 years of experience to Certara, using modeling to advance new medicines. An adventure-seeker with grit, she’s run ultramarathons, biked through deserts and across states, and hiked all 48 of the White Mountain 4,000-footers. When she’s not chasing her own big goals, she plays a vital role in supporting Shan’s. She finds joy in the process, from mapping routes to creating spreadsheets to writing blog posts. Josh is also the brains behind the concept of crewing from the saddle, riding alongside Shan while managing the not-so-glamorous details of more than 5,000 miles of shared adventures. Because "just crewing" or "just riding" didn't seem hard enough.

The East Coast Greenway Expedition (ECGE)

✨ our first really big trip together  ✨

The ECGE came about as we brainstormed ideas for the "next big thing" back in 2021. For decades, the East Coast Greenway Alliance has worked to connect multi-use trails that create a continuous route from Key West, FL, to Calais, ME. When we reached out to the Alliance with some questions about pedestrian access, a partnership was born, and a beautiful story was written. Since the ECGE in 2022, the protected paths on the Greenway have grown by over 100 miles and received millions of dollars in state and federal funding.

🎥 The below YouTube video captures the essence of our ~3000-mile trip 🎥

Spoiler alert: We get engaged at the end of the journey 💗
